The Global Perspectives Major focuses on the conservation and management of renewable and non-renewable resources, policy formation, and planning within a global context.
Two notable features of this major are the international education that students receive through either a study abroad period or an intensive international field school or related experience, and the global issues capstone course which uses international case studies and modeling approaches to explore the effects of decision-making on resource sustainability.
Compared to the Science and Management Major, the Global Perspectives Major examines additional resource systems, has more emphasis on international policy and planning, and requires mandatory international experience. The Faculty of Forestry boasts links to over 25 different universities in 18 different countries, allowing a student to spend up to one year studying abroad. In consultation with our International Exchange Advisor, often these placements can be credited towards your degree program, and, best of all, you still only pay UBC tuition fees while taking courses at universities around the world!
The international experience required for the GP major could involve study abroad, international internship, field school, or volunteer experience. Students should obtain their international experience during their NRC degree before entering 4th year, though international experiences obtained within 1 year before entering the NRC degree would be considered at the discretion of the program director.
Experience must be gained outside of Canada, and for international students, it must also be in a different country from which they most recently lived. Some exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the program director.
