Forests are complex ecosystems, comprised of thousands of organisms – plants & animals, insects, fungi, algae, and bacteria. The way we manage our natural resources is based upon our understanding of how these organisms live and interact with each other and with the non-living elements of the forest environment, such as geology, soil, water, fire, and climatology.

Together with their program director, students will select an area of concentration during their second year. Examples of specialization include genetics, ecology, entomology, pathology, silviculture, and hydrology. An International Specialization is also available to those students who wish to have a greater focus on forest ecosystems in another part of the world.
The degree provides a partial basis for acquiring professional certification as either a Registered Professional Forester or Registered Professional Biologist.
